Greetings Salisbury Elk-Lick! I hope all is well with each of you, as we move through the beginning of our school year. In continuing with the trend from last year, I would like to do my best to keep you each informed with some of the things that are going on at the high school. First, many of you are probably aware of the wonderful new addition to our school, Miss Jacqui Palmer, guidance counselor. We welcome her and are excited at the many opportunities and assistance she is providing for our students. Also, clubs have been formed and many are meeting on a regular basis. These clubs include FFA (Future Farmers of America), FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America), Tech Ed. Club, Home Ec. Club, SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions), Fitness Club, Game Club, Art Club, Drama Club, and Student Newspaper. Most of these clubs are only open to students in grades 9-12, but there are some that are being offered to grades 7-8 as well. In addition to the volleyball, football, and cross-country teams that are running this fall, we have added an Esports team that is participating in a league run by St. Francis University. They have practices once per week and will compete starting in October. We have four students that have chosen to participate in the programs offered by the Somerset County Technology Center (SCTC). Those students are involved in the Early Childhood, Cosmetology, Health & Medical, and Dental Assistant programs. We also have 5 seniors that are participating in our work mentoring program. This program allows juniors and seniors that meet the requirements of the program to leave school early and gain credit for work experience that is related to a prospective future career. We are planning a high school musical that is to be performed in the spring. The title of the musical is still a surprise, so that will be announced at a later date. Students will have the opportunity to sign up September 17th. After that, the Jump Start Theater will be sending some performers to encourage and help our students. Practices will begin after the Christmas break. Although our last musical, The Wizard of Oz, needed to be performed virtually, we are excited for our plan to have this one in-person! New 65” Samsung interactive panels are arriving and will be installed over the next 6-10 weeks. Two panels will be provided in most classrooms. One will be for teacher presentation, and one will be used to allow a much smoother integration of virtual students into the classroom. Although we all recognize that in-person learning is most often the best for our students, the district believes that having a strong virtual learning environment is important in our current educational climate. On December 7th, there will be a FAFSA night with a PHEAA representative for any parents and students interested in attending. Thank you, Jason Collier, High School Principal
